Men accumulate accessories the way houses accumulate cables, which is gradually and then all at once. The correction is arithmetic rather than aesthetic: pick a number and stay under it.

My number is three visible objects, watch included. A watch, a wedding band and one other thing, and the other thing had better be earning its place. Anything beyond that and you are no longer dressed, you are curated, and there is a visible difference at about two metres.

The bracelet question is the one everybody gets wrong on holiday. A single strand of something that could plausibly have been acquired locally reads as a life; four stacked bracelets in mixed materials reads as a gift shop. If you must, choose one, in a natural material, and let it fade over about eighteen months into something with a story attached.

Watches on summer holiday should be small and unfussy. A 36 to 39mm case on a leather or fabric strap disappears under a shirt cuff and does not announce itself across a lunch table, which is more than can be said for a 44mm chronograph on a bracelet weighing 180 grams. The point of a watch on holiday is that you already know roughly what time it is.

The genuinely underrated item is a hat you will actually wear. Most men buy a Panama, feel absurd, and leave it in the hotel room for the entire trip. A soft-brim cotton or a low-profile linen cap costs perhaps $90 and gets worn daily, which makes it the highest-utility accessory in the bag.

Sunglasses have already had their article and I stand by all of it. The remaining rule is that whatever you carry should look better after two weeks in a canvas bag than it did in the shop. Anything that requires protecting is the wrong object for August.
